1922 Crossley 19.6

Imported from Australia in 2015; mostly complete rolling chassis; Australian coachwork; dash and instrumentation; potential as a powerful and impressive family tourer

The 19.6 Crossley was a very expensive car when it was made, a rolling chassis costing some £625. Quality was the watchword, but it was not at the expense of great weight, the car being beautifully engineered from stem to stern and offering a very respectable performance from its 3.7-litre four-cylinder side-valve engine.

Passers-by would have been impressed when they saw this car in 1922 and it would have been a talking point wherever it went. The car was exported as a rolling chassis and bodied by A R Miller in Marrickville, a moderate-sized coachbuilder in a suburb of Sydney.

Nothing is known of its subesquent life, the car being acquired by a gentleman in Brisbane who was seriously into his Crossleys. It arrived in the UK in 2015 as part of a package of cars imported by Frazer Sloan - principally as a source of spares for the other Crossley in the sale today, although as that is basically a complete rolling chassis, it seemed churlish not to offer this car for restoration. Although a major project, it is essentially a complete car requiring a new rear section to the bodywork and comes complete with bonnet, four wings, quality headlights and fittings.

Believed to date from 1922, we are advised that the braked front axle is a later addition, a previous owner opting to add front-wheel brakes to the car at some point in its life.

On offer for little more than the shipping and import costs - the restoration expences and tasks needed would be much the same as taking on a cheap mass produced car and spending ones evenings and weekends on that - the end result being in a different league altogether.
