1990 Rover 216GTi
Rare to
find 1.6 GTi with Honda engine; grippy half-leather seats; manual box; recent
new wheels and showing just 34,858 miles
Supplied new by Wednesbury Motor Services Ltd in October 1990 this
R8 series Rover 200 comes to us in now rare 216 GTi guise. This series of 200,
all came in four and two door coupe/convertible configurations and was initially
designed to follow on from the Maestro, which actually limped on as the ‘budget’
variant until 1994. This generation of 200 was the first launched under the
newly privatised Rover Group and designed in collaboration with Honda, their
similar Concerto model being built alongside the 200 at the Longbridge
plant.
Finished in white with grey bumpers and
body trim the car rides on what looks like a recent set of Calibre/Motor Rismo
10-spoke 17” alloy wheels which give the car an arguably more modern
look.
Under the bonnet, we find the Honda D16A9
four-cylinder DOHC engine which develops c.126bhp (without a catalyst) driving
the front wheels via Rover PG-1 five-speed manual
transmission.
Inside, we find half leather and
grey cloth sports seats, electric front windows, electric glass sunroof, power
steering, electric mirrors, wood trim (very 90’s Rover!) and face-off radio/CD
player.
The car shows just 34,858 miles which
looks like it may be genuine and includes the V5C revealing four former keepers,
the owner’s pack and service book recording five stamps, the last in October
1995 at 19,808 miles by Sharps Repairs & re-sprays Ltd with supporting
invoice.
We also find a Wednesbury Rover Group
used car warranty card from when it was sold again by them in November 1991 at
8,211 miles, one old MOT and current valid until April 2023 which recorded two
minor advisories for slightly distorted NSR wheel and track rod end dust cover
deteriorated. A quick glance at the
MOT history shows the mileage creeping up from 30,470 in 2006 up to the current
of 34,858 with one minor mileage discrepancy on a failure in March 2015, which
was corrected on pass the next day.
Ready to be
enjoyed, this quirky 90s GTi Rover boasts a punchy Honda engine and tidy
interior and makes a compelling case as a junior modern classic hot
hatch?
