1954 MG TF 1250
Fewer than 1,000 miles since full restoration and in super condition throughout
Last of the MG T-series line and arguably the best, the TF was introduced in October 1953. Although mechanically very similar to its TD predecessor, the provision of a shorter radiator, revised wing line and faired-in headlamps lent it an altogether more sophisticated air. Equipped with precise rack-and-pinion-steering, independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension and four-wheel drum brakes, the new model helped maintain the marque's 'Safety Fast' reputation.
Powered by a 58bhp twin-carb 1,250cc XPAG four-cylinder engine, the TF could crack 60mph in around 18 seconds with a top speed of 80mph. From November 1954 onwards it was also available with a larger 1,466cc XPEG engine producing 63bhp. Just 9,600 TF models were made (6,200 with the XPAG engine) before it was replaced by the entirely different MGA in 1955, the vast majority being sold in LHD to the American market.
First registered in Yorkshire in July 1954, this TF was acquired as a barn find by our vendor in August 2017 at which point it had been off the road for at least 30 years. Formerly a professional engineer, he wanted a project to keep him busy in his retirement and spent the next two years painstakingly rebuilding the car into the fine specimen you see today.
The extent of the work carried out is too detailed to list in full here but is amply covered in a journal kept by the vendor and by dozens of invoices and many photos on file. The chassis and bodywork turned out to be remarkably good and needed only localised repairs and a fresh coat of paint.
The engine (no. 35876) turned out to be from a slightly later TF and had been previously reconditioned by BMC. It was stripped down and found to be in excellent health, needing little more than new piston rings, core plugs, timing chain and gaskets. The head was rebuilt and fitted with hardened valve seats suitable for unleaded fuel. The gearbox and axle were also found to be in good shape and needed little more than fresh oil.
Brakes/suspension/steering were all rebuilt as required and a new wiring loom was fitted. The instruments were all cleaned and repaired as necessary – even the clock works although it has been temporarily disconnected to prevent draining the battery while the car is in storage.
The interior was professionally retrimmed with red leather seats and new doorcards, carpets and sound-deadening. A new mohair hood was also made along with new sidescreens and a tonneau cover. The wheels were shot-blasted and powder-coated and fitted with a new set of tyres. A new stainless steel exhaust was also fitted.
Since the restoration was completed in 2019 the car has covered fewer than 1,000 fine weather miles and it remains in sparkling condition throughout. Retaining its original (transferable) number plate, NWX 184, this freshly rejuvenated TF doubtless has another 70 years of useful life ahead of it.
