1968 Ford Transit Mk1 Camper
Engine, gearbox
and brakes overhauled; running and driving; a well equipped and very smart MkI
Transit camper
In 1965, Ford launched the front-engined Transit into
a market segment largely dominated by so-called 'forward control' vehicles where
the driver sat virtually on top of, or right next to the engine.
The
engines used in the UK were the Essex V4 for the petrol version in 1.7- and
2-litre capacities. By using relatively short V4 engines, Ford were able to
minimise the additional length needed to place the engine ahead of the driver,
thus significantly reducing the excessive noise, smell and cabin heat of earlier
vans.
The Transit has been the best-selling light commercial vehicle in
Europe eversince, with over 8 million of them produced, sold and thrashed to
within an inch of their lives; who hasn’t been stuck behind one, or had one up
their own exhaust - often at the same time.
Used and developed for any
and all jobs, it wasn’t long before a camper version made its debut. This
stunning 1968 example joined the James Hull collection in 2013 having been
freshly restored by its previous owner.
It had languished in dry storage
for 25 years, before being exhumed and recommissioned for the road. Its period
in hibernation had been kind, with no welding required underneath (when did you
last hear that about a Transit). The engine was removed and ‘rebuilt’, although
there are no bills to tell us what work was undertaken and the gearbox serviced
with new seals and fresh oil.
The brakes and lines were also replaced
along with the shock absorbers – using as many NOS items as possible and the
interior is very smart and original, including the two-burner hob and
grill.
We sold it from the collection in 2018, since when it has been
used on high days and holidays. The car has had ten previous owners and is
certainly one of the nicest Transits we have seen, and since it has been onsite
with us has been running and driving rather nicely.
