Wines from private cellar achieve over £50,000
A significant private collection of Wine, Port and Madeira came under the hammer at Brightwells’ recent wine sale which took place on Wednesday 17th April.
Fine Wines and Ports from as far back as the 1920s and Madeiras as far back as the 1870s attracted bidders from Hong Kong, France and Scandinavia as well as all around the UK and Ireland.
The owner of the wines sadly passed away last year. He populated his cellar with the greatest wines from every vintage and was well known for presenting dinner guests with exceptional wines from their birth year.
Highlights from the Bordeaux section included 5 bottles of Petrus (sold at £4,150) and a 12 bottle case of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1972 (£1,900). A lively battle for 6 bottles of Chateau d’Yquem finally ended with the hammer falling at £2,000.
The Burgundy section featured many wines from the iconic Domaine de la Romanee Conti: 6 bottles of La Tache 1970 achieved £2,100 and 4 Grands Echezeaux made £1,000.
There were some strong prices in the Port and Champagne sections, including £1,500 for a Salon ‘Le Mesnil’ 1971 and £1,500 for 5 magnums of Fonseca 1970.
The Whisky and Cognac section included a number of ultra-rare bottlings: the top price on the day was £3,150 for a 1938 Louis XIII Cognac from Remy Martin.
The sale total was just under £140,000 with an excellent clearance rate of 94%.
