Biggest ever sale attracts world-wide bidding audience.
Brightwells’ latest auction of Wine, Port, Champagne and Whisky proved to be their largest ever with over 1500 lots sold over three days. Over 250 buyers from all over the world registered to do battle online as fine Claret and Burgundy, Vintage Port and Champagne and rare Malt Whisky all came under the hammer.
The Bordeaux section proved very popular for investors and consumers alike. A superb private collection from a mid-Wales assembled over 7 decades set pulses racing with over 1200 bottles ranging from 1948 to 2006. A perfect case of Chateau Latour 1970 (£4,905) and 6 bottles of Chateau Lafite 2003 (£4,175) were just 2 of the highlights.
Lovers of fine Burgundy were not disappointed with an excellent assemblage of top quality wines from the region. Domaine Romainee Conti continues to command superlative prices, a bottle of Le Montrachet 1976 achieved £3,993 and a La Tache 1998 saw the hammer fall at £3,485.
As the festive season approaches thoughts often turn to fine Champagne and Vintage Port. Both sections yielded opportunities for investment and celebratory consumption. The top priced Champagne on the day was a magnum of Krug 1964 (£1996); the star from over 150 lots of Vintage Port was a rare case of Warre 1955 (£3146).
Over 250 lots of Malt Whisky were offered, attracting bidders from continental Europe, Scandinavia, Hong Kong and China. The top priced whiskies on the day were a brace of Macallan 30 year old in Sherry Oak which achieved a total of £16,903.
The third day of the sale offered something different for buyers as the entire cellar contents of a major London theatre came under the hammer. Buyers with a keen eye for a bargain were well served as 3600 bottles of wines and spirits were sold without reserve in 250 lots.
