SOLD
From current 42 year ownership; hardtop; overdrive;
Holbay head; twin-Webers; wires; extremely usable example driven to the
sale
The vendor spotted this Alpine on a car lot in
Monmouth back in 1978. It had been with the dealer for some two years
unloved and was on offer for just £200.
It was off-white, had a cracked
block, sad interior but otherwise seemed in reasonable order.
It was
transported back to his home in Birmingham where work began. A replacement
engine was sourced and fitted with a Holbay head prior to installation.
Initially the original carburettor was used, but this soon gave way to a pair of
Weber DCOE 45s. A stainless exhaust was added and the interior repaired along
with a new hood and tonneau.
By around 1980, the vendor felt it needed a
respray and chose VW Saphire blue to replace the off-white colour. The vendor
adds that it was purely coincidence that it closely resembled the colour used by
Sean Connery's Alpine in the Dr No movie...
He then added a Moto
Lita wheel and added a positive earth radio. In 1986 he founded the 'Hood Down
Club' which has grown into a major club. The Alpine was a founder member and has
been on many of their runs.
The large history file incudes many bills
showing regular service (going back to the 1980s), care and attention and there
are some boxes of useful parts in the boot. The car is obviously fitted with a
hard top and comes with the afforementioned soft top too. It has been run
regularly throughout the year and has travelled reliably all over the UK and
into France.
The car itself carries an MOT unitl January 2021 which shows
advisories of a minor oil leak, some light corrosion to sills and closing panels
(but not considered excessive) and slightly perished suspension bushes. It has
had the usual running repairs according to the invoices from Wenlock Motors and
older bodywork attention to door bottoms etc. The Alpine was driven some 30
miles to the sale and is ready to be enjoyed, used and
improved.
