1928 Morris Six Four Seat
Tourer
Comprehensively restored; new bodywork styled on an
MG 18/80; lusty 2.5-litre -six; photos of rebuild
Purchased by the
vendor as a project in around 2011, he had harboured a desire to own an 18/80 MG
for many years and this seemed like a good way of owning one in all but
name...
The Morris Six was not the first six-cylinder Morris, but it was
the first commercially successful one, its ohc engine being designed by Frank
Woollard and Arthur George at Morris' engine branch. Woollard was persuaded to
develop the six-cylinder unit by Cecil Kimber who was Morris Garages General
Manager at the time. It is no wonder that he was to use it in his low-slung
chassis in the first 18/80 MG.
Anyway, for those who can't quite run to
an 18/80, a Morris Six rolling chassis is surely the next best thing, which is
what attracted the vendor who set about its restoration and subsequent re-body
in the MG style. The result works very well, the fit and finish and standard of
construction being extremely high.
The running gear has all been fully
restored and the new coachwork constructed in ash and aluminium which has been
fabric covered. The upholstery is in leather, the only job left to complete
being the hood, although the complex job of the frame has been sorted so it
simply requires trimming.
In 2015, when the project was nearing
completion, the vendor managed to contact a member of the family who had
previously owned the car. They managed to turn up the original logbook - or copy
thereof, which was sufficient to reunite the car with its original number TY
4950.
Notes on file show great attention to detail, ensuring faithful
body lines, louvres and proportions to its MG relation. The vendor purchased a
tall diff ratio which he never got round to fitting which is available by
seperate negotiation should its new owner wish to get even more useful
performance from its torquey 2,468cc engine.
In very nicely restored
condition, this Morris Six aka 18/80 style four-seater tourer offers flexible
performance and VSCC eligibility for all the family.
