1990 Volvo 240GL
Three owners from new and
just 67,143 miles indicated; in storage since 2010 - runs and drives; ripe for
recommissioning
The venerable 240 Volvo, part of the 200-series was
produced between 1974 and 1993, almost 20 years during which time a staggering
2.8 million were sold worldwide.
Here we find a later, May 1990 240GL
(Grande Luxe) example from 12 year ownership with just three owners from new.
The car has been sitting in storage since 2010 and shows just 67,143 miles -
almost unheard of for these cars, capable of galactic mileage (we had a cracker
in the last sale showing 161,000 miles for example) being so well made, people
often keep them for long periods finding them very comfortable and capable
family cars.
The car was delivered to us by trailer given it has not had
an MOT since 2009 at which point it had covered 67,004 miles with preceeding
MOTs online showing the car to have covered 58,335 miles at MOT in April 2006
when the digitalisation began. The car starts, runs and drove around for
our images and video, and appeared to run normally, although it feels like there
is a binding brake - no surprise given its been stored for 10 years, but also
somewhat remarkable!
Finished in non-metallic blue with grey
interior the car is wonderfully original and intact with only limited signs of
age and time spent off the road to the body with some localised scabbing, a
small hole under the rear window and a few bits that will likely require
attention to the lower arches/sill section. Inside, its business as usual
in that wonderfully 80s Scandinavian way with a simple, clear, unclustered dash
with original radio cassette still present, working electric front windows
and front seat heaters fitted. Up front, the 2.0 'Red-block' B19 series
petrol four-cylinder is driven to the rear wheels through 5-speed M47 series
manual transmission which feels as though it works as it should.
Within
the history file we find the V5C, copy old V5, 4 old MOTs, invoice for a battery
and two Volvo books, one a history of Volvo from 1927 to 1989 and the second, a
pocket mechanical guide to the 240 series.
An ideal candidate for a
sympathetic recommissioning, the car will no doubt reward as an unusual and
usable investment if kept standard and with lower miles. We all love a 240 here
