1990 Volkswagen T25 Westfalia California
Camper
The Rolls-Royce of VW campers!
Beloved by generations of surf-dudes and independent
travellers, the iconic VW Transporter was launched way back in 1950 and remains
in production to this day, as classless and ageless as ever.
This Masalla Red T25 camper was delivered new in 1990 as a
German home market model in LHD and is powered by the 2.1 litre ‘Wasserboxer’
engine mated to a 5-speed gearbox. These T25 models are the most civilised and
easy to drive of the rear-engine classic campers. Reasonable fuel economy and
plenty of power makes them the default choice for world travellers and camper
fanatics alike.
The Westfalia California conversion on this one means that
you have four berths, a double ‘rock n roll’ bed plus an upstairs double. A
multi-fuel fridge keeps your beers cool, while a two-burner hob and grill take
care of the cooking duties. Other comforts include: two swivelling Captain’s
chairs with armrests up front; electric front windows; a DAB radio; a multi
positional table; a removable buddy seat; a stainless steel sink that pumps
water from an onboard water tank; a ‘pop top’ roof; an Eberspacher plumbed in
heating system; and huge amounts of wardrobe space to make the T25 the ultimate
holiday home on wheels.
Thoughtful Westfalia details such as the plug-in driver’s
map reading light are included, as well as a complete set of fine mesh curtains
which are stowed away in the rear locker. For night-time use, the original
curtains are still hanging and draw smoothly. It even has a tow bar if you need
extra carrying capacity. Instruction booklets for some of the gadgets are also
included, along with the original Volkswagen Transporter/Caravelle
handbooks.
Imported to the UK in 2006, it has had just two owners
since, the current owner buying it via Brightwells in 2015 when it had
219,000kms on the clock (136,000 miles), a total which has since risen to
221,900kms. It comes with a good service history including nine stamps in the
book during its time in Germany and regular specialist maintenance since
arriving here.
It was last serviced just before the auction in July this
year, including new power steering and alternator belts, new fuel hoses suitable
for E10 fuel and new gear shift bushes. A new battery with a 3-year guarantee
was also fitted at around the same time. The current MOT runs until June 2022
and there are also 9 old MOTs on file.
You are advised to view several camper vans before coming
to inspect this one, just so you can appreciate the variations in quality. If
you are already familiar with these vehicles you will be taking in the nice
details and original features of this one and you will be appreciating that it
has been cherished by enthusiasts who could afford to care for it. It has never
had a surf bum or alternative lifestyle traveller within its pristine
accommodation! All that lets the side down are some rust scabs here and there,
as shown in the photos.
