1989 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL (W126)
Long-wheel
base three-owner range-topper in lovely order with electric rear seat; acres of
space and 5.0 V8 upfront; showing just 119,000 miles - feel like a
Plutocrat for Mondeo money!
Fancy feeling regal,
like a Plutocrat or even an African Dictator? The W126 series SEL has likely
ticked all those boxes, and no surprise it was a hell of a car, considered one
of the best built and engineered Mercedes' of all time.
Dating from June
1989 this later, series 2 model comes to us in rarer SEL – long wheel base form
and is powered by the powerful 5.0 developing (we believe, as a UK CAT model)
248bhp and 390Nm of torque driving the rear wheels via 4-speed automatic
transmission with Sports and Economy mode.
Finished in desirable Nautic
Blue and riding on original polished 15inch 15-hole flat face alloy wheels with
matt blue bumpers and lower section trim the car still looks
good.
Inside, we find acres of light grey leather with electric front
seats with 2-position driver memory, walnut trim, fluted leather door cards,
electric windows front and back, electric passenger mirror, sunroof, front
centre arm rest, cruise control, dual zone climate control with A/C, rear blind,
heated front seats, period looking yet modern DAB Blaupunkt CD player with
remote and in the back, an electrically adjustable heated rear bench seat which
functions as it should with oodles of leg room and comfort a
plenty.
Presenting very well, the car started promptly, but it is
clear it would benefit from a major service and some regular use. We gather it
has been in storage for some time, seeing little recent use - appearing to be
off the road between 2004/5 and 2019 when it was offered for mot showing 118,848
miles, the first recorded online.
The mileage currently shows 119,013
which has been covered by just six owners, the current since October 1996.
Within the history file we find the V5C, owner’s pack and duplicate service book
with one stamp dated February 2004 at 118,334 miles, a selection of
invoices for routine maintenance and parts, mostly at Mercedes main dealers
dating back to the mid/late 90’s, 6 old MOTs; copy old logbook and a host of
SORN notifications. The current MOT is valid until October 2021 with just 1
minor advisory recorded for a minor leak of exhaust gases.
These later
series 2 model W126 models have really started to gain in popularity and value
of late, no surprise given their rugged, boxy good looks and super build quality
and as a 500 SEL model it is even more appealing. What a cool
car.
