1976 MG Midget 1500
Good running order;
recently serviced with various new parts; hardtop; alloy wheels; cheap and
cheerful classic
The Midget totally sums up the MG ethos – to make small,
quick, good-handling cars at an inexpensive price.
Beginning in 1963 with a 55bhp 1,098cc A-series engine, it
was steadily developed, front drum brakes soon giving way to discs and in the
MkII model gaining improved rear suspension with semi-elliptical springs. In
1966 the MkIII was introduced, powered by the punchy and flexible 1,275cc engine
that had helped to enhance the Mini Cooper’s reputation. With 65bhp on tap the
Midget was capable of snappy acceleration and speeds into the 90s.
Styling changes in 1972 saw the new Rostyle wheels housed
in rounded off rear wheel arches in place of the old square ones and in 1974,
the MkIV 1500 arrived. Powered by the 1,493cc pushrod OHV engine from the
once-rival Triumph Spitfire (which also provided the transmission), the little
car was now capable of 100mph from the 66bhp motor. US legislation also ushered
in rubber bumpers which increased rear ride height by two inches but gave little
away in terms of handling.
First registered in June 1976, this Midget 1500 has been
in the current ownership since June 2019. An online MOT history check shows that
it has always been in light, regular use, clocking up some 10,000 miles since
2006, the odometer currently showing 15,271 miles.
Although there is no early history with the car, the
current owner has kept it in good running order with invoices showing various
new parts in the last couple of years. These include: a new aluminium radiator
and coolant hoses; carburettor overhaul; water pump; heater hoses; oil and
filter; air filter; spark plugs; set of stainless steel wheel nuts plus various
other minor items.
The rubber bumpers have been removed for a more sporting
look which is enhanced by a set of Minilite-style alloy wheels. A hard top is
also fitted and although the hood frame is still present there is no soft top.
As you can see in the photos, it is no show queen but the
vendor reports that it is very sound and drives very well, being driven some 60
miles to the sale. It has certainly been starting promptly and feeling very
nippy as we have moved it around on site with good oil pressure.
