1972 MG Midget MkIII
Recently restored
around a new Heritage Shell; excellent condition
throughout
Essentially a slightly more expensive badge-engineered
version of the Austin-Healey Sprite MkII, the MG Midget was launched in 1961,
initially with a 948cc twin carb A-Series engine producing 46bhp.
In 1962
the engine was uprated to a 1,098cc unit now with 56bhp and brake discs replaced
the drums at the front. With the launch of the MkIII version in 1966, the engine
was enlarged yet again to 1,275cc and now produced 67bhp. The rear axle ratio
was also increased for more relaxed cruising along with a host of minor
revisions to the interior and exterior.
Eminently tuneable, the MkIII is
now particularly popular in the many race series that are organised for MG
Midgets to compete in. On the road it is an exhilarating car to drive as you
always feel like you are going twice as fast as you really
are!
This stunning MG Midget MkIII still looks
virtually as good today as it must have done when it first left the factory in
January 1972. We are told that it has recently been fully restored around a new
Heritage Shell, and although there are only a few invoices for a multitude of
trim parts ordered from Moss and The MGB Hive in May/June/July of this year, the
car speaks for itself and it really does look to be in excellent condition
throughout.
The British Racing Green paintwork has a deep shine, the
engine bay is nicely detailed and the black leather seats are in fine shape, as
are the carpets and the hood. Riding on Minilite-style alloys shod with a set of
Firestone tyres, it has been starting promptly and running beautifully as we
have moved it around on site with good 60psi oil pressure.
As good an
example as you could wish to find, it is being offered here for less
than cost of a new bare shell on its own, let alone to restore one to this
condition and will turn heads wherever it goes.
