1973 Triumph TR6
Older restoration in superb
condition throughout; everything rebuilt; as good underneath as it is up
top
The Swinging
Sixties was a time of great social change in Britain and everything suddenly
became more colourful and exciting once the dark days of rationing and austerity
had faded to a distant memory in the rear view mirror.
Triumph got in on the act by revitalising its classic TR range in
1968. Sharp, clean and fresh, the
TR6 looked much more modern than its predecessors, with aggressive front and
rear end styling penned by Karmann of Germany, although the centre section
actually remained the same as the TR4 and TR5.
For the UK market, the straight-six fuel-injected 150bhp 2,498cc
engine also carried over from the previous TR5 model, although from 1973 it was
changed for a milder 125bhp unit to meet stricter emissions regulations. In
full-fat 150bhp form it could sprint to 60mph in 8.5 seconds on its way to a top
speed of 120mph. A huge sales success, more than 94,000 TR6s were built (90% of
them to detuned US specifications), before it was replaced by the much softer
TR7 in 1975.
First registered in September
1973, this superb UK market TR6 appears to have been restored twice, once in the
early 1990s when the body/chassis were restored and again in 2020 which was
mainly mechanical improvements. Old MOTs show that it only covered around 4,600
miles between the two restorations. The full extent of the work carried out is
too detailed to list in full here but is amply covered in many invoices and
notes on file.
The engine was rebuilt which
included: bores honed; new piston rings; polished crank; all new shells and
seals; head rebuilt with new valves, guides and cam followers; spin-on oil
filter conversion; alloy rocker box; high torque starter motor; refurbished
dynamo; full stainless steel exhaust including downpipe.
The cooling system was uprated with a high efficiency alloy
radiator, multi-vane water pump and an electric cooling fan. The fuel system was
rebuilt with a new metering unit, new high pressure Bosch fuel pump and a new
alloy fuel tank. The heating system was overhauled along with all the electrical
items. The gearbox was also overhauled along with the propshaft which has new
Hardy Spicer joints. Brakes/steering/suspension were all fully rebuilt with many
new parts.
The interior was fully retrimmed
with new carpets, seat foams and covers, door cards, wheel-arch covers, walnut
dash, MotaLita steering wheel etc. The bodywork is excellent and the car looks
as good underneath as it does up top.
Said to
drive as well as it looks, the car has certainly been starting promptly and
running beautifully as we have moved it around on site, with good 60psi oil
pressure. Kept in a heated garage by the current owner and used sparingly in
fine weather only, this is one of the nicest TR6 models that we have seen and
would sit well in any collection.
