1975 Rover P6 3500S Manual
Only 55,800 miles
from new; power steering; displayed on the Rover P6 Owner's Club stand at the
NEC in 2021; recently recommissioned after spending 16 years in a private
collection including reconditioned gearbox, new clutch, brake master cylinder,
water pump, alternator etc; runs very sweetly; driven 50 miles to the
sale
Top of the
Rover P6 range was the 3500S, launched in 1970 with a strengthened all-synchro
4-speed manual gearbox, twin power bulges in the bonnet and 161bhp. With fine
handling and a 0-60 dash of 9 seconds and a top speed of 123mph, it could
outpace most other saloons and quickly became a big favourite with the motorway
police and the Flying Squad. The P6 was finally replaced by the ‘flying wedge’
SD1 in June 1976, although such was the affection for the model that the 3500S
remained in production until March 1977.
Finished in Almond with a Buckskin cloth interior, this 3500S was
supplied new by Henlys of Manchester in August 1975, the original
purchase invoice showing that it cost £3,820 which included power steering
– a desirable option which added £135 to the bill. The first owner also opted to
have it Ziebart treated for an additional £60.
It has lots of history to show regular upkeep, the Passport to
Service book and various invoices showing that it was serviced five times by
Henlys up until 1979 by which time it had covered 9,099 miles. Other invoices
show subsequent maintenance up until the late 1990s by which time it had covered
53,000 miles – a total which has since only risen to 55,800 miles.
It has had five owners from new, the fourth
keeping it from 2005 – 2021 as part of a private collection. Our vendor acquired
it from the collection in January 2021 and has since recommissioned the car.
There are no invoices for this but we are told that it included a reconditioned
gearbox; new clutch; new water pump; new alternator and a new brake master
cylinder. In November 2021 it was displayed on the Rover P6 Owner's Club stand
at the NEC.
Driven some 50 miles to the sale, this 3500S has been
starting promptly and running very sweetly as we have moved it around on site
with good 40psi oil pressure and a lovely V8 burble.
