Description
Fresh from a nut-and-bolt restoration which cost over £35,000; uprated
unleaded engine with fast road cam and big valves; a most attractive TD all
round
This MG TD
comes with an Octagon Car Club dating certificate confirming that it is a UK car
built in Abingdon on 12th July 1950. Although a RHD model, it later found its
way to America, our vendor acquiring it about five years ago from a dealer who
had imported it from the States.
A retired
engineer who restores for fun, not profit, he has spent the last few years
getting this TD into the fine state you see today, invoices on file amounting to
some £35,000. Most of this had been
spent on parts as the vendor has carried out the majority of the work himself,
enlisting professional help only when required.
The full extent of the work is far too detailed to cover here, but
is amply documented in invoices, work sheets and photos on file. Rest assured, every aspect has been
attended to: chassis/body/trim/brakes/steering/suspension/electrics/weather
equipment, etc. The gearbox has
been overhauled with new bearings/seals/gaskets and a new clutch kit. The rear axle has been rebuilt with new
oil seals with lip seals to diff and hubs.
The
original engine (XPAG/TD1711) had been replaced with a Gold Seal BLMC unit
(2710) which has been rebuilt with many new parts including: new pistons and
bearings; cylinders rebored and crank reground to +60; unleaded cylinder head
complete with large valves, bottom end gasket set and oil seals; high lift
camshaft; timing chain and tensioner; large and small core plugs; spin-on oil
filter conversion; engine mountings and stabiliser; HT leads and Champion plug
terminals; refurbished distributor; rebuilt oil pump with new gears and gasket;
new starter motor.
The vendor advises that all
the compressions are good (130+psi) and that the oil pressure is a healthy
40psi.
Since the restoration was completed the
car has only covered a few ‘shakedown’ miles and it will require a period of
gentle running-in and fine tuning before the performance can be exploited to the
full.
