A superb catalogue offering classic French Wines, Vintage Port and a large section of Malt Whisky was offered at Brightwell’s Wine Sale on Wednesday 6th December.
A full saleroom ensured a convivial mood, with buyers from near and far keen to secure bargains for the festive season, and many others joining in by telephone and internet.
The French Wine section ran to over 250 lots and featured a number of private collections from London, Shropshire, the Midlands and Edinburgh. The top price achieved in the section was for a rare case of Richebourg 1969 by Domaine Romanee Conti selling for £6,000. An 8 bottle lot of Chateau Haut Brion 1985 saw the hammer fall at £2,250.
In all over 700 lots were offered with private collectors, merchants, dealers and restaurateurs all registering to bid.
One lot that caught the public’s imagination was a Jeroboam of Italian Sparkling Wine, which had been specially produced for Elton John’s birthday. The sale also featured Vintage Champagnes and Cognacs from the same collection.
Vintage Port tends to be very popular at Christmas and this year was no exception. Over 70 lots were offered in the Port section, bidding was brisk and some excellent prices were achieved. 12 bottles of Taylor’s 1977 sold at £720 and 12 bottles of Dow’s 1967 achieved £550.
The Malt Whisky section of the catalogue ran to over 200 individual bottles and attracted private collectors, dealers and specialist retailers from all over the country. Limited edition, single cask whiskies and rare older bottlings formed much of the section. The top prices paid on the day were for 2 bottles from the Macallan distillery: a 25 year old 1958/59 vintage achieved £2,700 and an 18 year old 1973 went under the hammer for £1,550.
In all the Sale total was over £110,000 with a clearance rate of over 80%.
